Recommendations:  I can't help in the UK.  I found pipe tobacco to be excellent there but very expensive, and that was 30 years ago.  In the US we used to have relatively inexpensive "Dr. Graybow" pipes sold in most pharmacies.  I don't even know if they are still in business but they were not bad for a cheap pipe.  Used disposable filters.  Might have the same in the UK.  "Captain Black" tobacco with the white label was always my standby.

If you can find a tobacco/pipe shop, like Drastic says they will get you set up in no time.

All I know is that if you smoke a pipe, you want to smoke with a corn cob pipe.  It gives a much mellower flavor to the tobacco.  The corn cob pipe allows the tobacco to burn at a lower temperature, hence more flavor.

No experience with it, but I did tour the last corn cob pipe making place in Missouri last year and I asked if there was much demand for the corn cob pipe.  I thought they were kind of a gag thing.  However, the guy said that people who are die-hard pipe smokers prefer the corn cob pipe as it allows more of the flavor to develop.  It was actually rather fascinating.  The company actually had a specific variety of corn developed to give the best cob to make the pipes.
