I think I'll keep Win 7 on my bunker machine and upgrade to Linux when forced.

Take a look at scheduling updates. The path is
Settings > Updates & Security > Windows Update >Advanced Options

While there,

> Choose how updates are delivered.
I turned off "Updates from more than one place" --hopefully forcing MS-only delivery.

RE: contacts, they already have access to Twitter/FB contacts/account IDs when you email an @outlook or @hotmail account, you see them in the right pane.

It's a bit like when the BBC make a big deal about redesigning their website, and you find out they've only changed the homepage. Dig a little deeper and there are some pages with five year old creative on them. Windows 10 feel like that; some thrown together hybrid of new and old.

Was Windows 8(.1) like this?

Yeah.  From the UI standpoint, it really didn't take many tweaks (the 8.1 UI fixes, boot to desktop, mainly) to make 8.1 like XP with some (useless, smartphone-ish) eyecandy.

I have all three PCs I use regularly on Windows 10 now. I've had no problems with drivers or older software (Winamp, Nero Burning ROM 8) running. I'm starting to think Windows 7 looks a bit antiquated now. If anything, Windows 10 runs a little faster for me.

I bought a small ultrabook for client meetings, immediately upgraded to win10. After all driver updates this is a really nice machine:

So I've played with Win10 a few days now and have to admit I'm impressed, I guess I still have that tattoo. Slick though, reminds me of moving to XP and 7. I'll be upgrading my other machines for sure.

Still maddening though that they have figured out to have an option to pop the virtual keyboard when you hit a text input using the touchscreen in desktop mode.
