ok, so win10 works great on the new touchscreen laptop.

On an older laptop running win7, it is actual dogshit.

I can't get antimalware and whatever the fuck else is going on to stop long enough to get decent control of it to do anything.

Taking control away from us for updates, antimalware and whatever else is dumb as hell, I might as well be using an apple product (shoot me.)

W10 Anniversary Update manually loaded from MS website.  This ain't an update, it's a new install.  Takes a little over an hour. 

You'll need to turn off everything again using Custom and delete Edge & Store from your taskbar.  Other than some bloatware apps like Sports and Weather reappearing, I don't see any live tiles, ads, etc. on Start.  Desktop is as I had it prior to invoking the update.  So far, so good.

So this is not a forced update? I've not had anything change or prompt, but I did nuke just about everything with O&O Shutup.

btw, the above mentioned older laptop running win7 that didn't do so well in Oct is running fine now. We rolled back and retried right before the deadline and it's been smooth sailing. All our win machines are now 10.

It's my understanding that it WILL be forced, but I went ahead and pulled it manually.

I should note that everything OTHER THAN my usb monitor's drivers seem to be OK.  But my problem *may* be indicative of driver problems in general.

My main machine had a graphics driver conflict that was weird...I eventually could get a good boot if I disabled and re-enabled the add-in video card in device manager.

Ended up just trying another card, twice. First one wouldn't post, I think it didn't like the newer pci-e version. The second one worked (older pci-e), I was about to roll back to 7.

OK, my laptop got the Anniversary Update yesterday.  So far, no problems, though i did NOT want to allow G Chrome as the default browser.  Also, go through your settings again -particularly Cortana and app permissions.  A lot of switches were set to 'On' again. And there are some new switches as well --also set to 'On,' of course.

Re run Shutup Windows 10.  not to clear on what changed, as I did not make notes, but thx for the heads up.

MS put in a tricky UI in the 'Settings' --the left column hides the scroll bar unless you mouseover.  This, in turn, keeps some of the Privacy settings buried.

Go to Settings > Privacy >Left Col, very bottom > Background apps

and turn off a bunch of their crapware

W10 update is apparently installing a small pop-up over the G Chrome icon in the taskbar. It's not on my machines yet.

New W10 version will have ads in File Explorer. Here's how to preemptively turn them off., supposedly.

Launch File Explorer and the click View > Options > Change folder and search options.

In the Folder Options dialog that pops up, select the View tab.

In the Advanced Settings box, scroll down and uncheck the option labeled "Show sync provider notifications." Hit OK.
