When I go on maintenance, I use my 'No White Stuff Diet'

White = sugar, flour,  potatoes, & rice.

Bill. Whale springs to mind, but not sure if its PC here.  Its not in my home.  :P

Yeah, I can get whale in the supermarket sometimes, but it's not in constant supply. Have you ever had whale? They used to serve it here in school lunches because it was so cheap, but that's no longer the case. As supply has dwindled the price has risen. Also, it's not all that tasty. Too much blubber for my taste. I prefer it in small quantities. Goes well with beer as it has a sharp taste.

The tofu I can get here is really good. I had tofu in the US and couldn't believe how bad it was in comparison. I am a huge tofu fan.

I've read that there is a ton of mercury in whale.

'No White Stuff Diet' worked well for me too when I first started out.  I did it for over a year, then I had to go keto to keep dropping.

Cauliflower can be made into a decent potato substitute. I like it ok as-is, but can make 'hash browns' that are good enough they fool the grandkids.

Jicama (yeah, find THAT in JP, Bill) is sort of like tofu, so mild-tasting that you can disguise it as anything ---has a very, very faint apple-ish taste raw. I like it just to cut up and eat. Makes good french fries.

Possibly. I've heard that rumor too, but I get all the whale propaganda here that is unquestionably biased. They deny that their whale and dolphin meat is anything but healthy.

Cauliflower

Love the stuff. Hard to find in Japanese supermarkets.

Argh. Never even heard of that one. You've got me there.

I had whale in Norway. I found it unusual.  I guess if I had been  brought up on it, then it it would come nice.

Very surprised you cannot fine cauliflower... We mash it as potato sometimes too. My low carb is generally avoid sugar, and reduce potato and bread. I just love fluffy white bread, with real butter. Fresh from the oven.

>Jicama

It is *very* firm, like a raw turnip -maybe even firmer. Has very crisp crunch to it. Satisfying.  From Mexico, I think. I'm told street vendors sell it in S. California as a treat; thick slice dipped in lemon juice put on a stick (& frozen?).  Skin is PITA, ginger-ish.

My kids love jicama, especially the 10 y.o..

Bill, if you are looking for something that could be used like cauliflower as a substitute for potatoes and is available in Japan check out daikon.  It is a bit like jicama, a little less sweet.  You are probably already be familiar with daikan, it is used in many Asian dishes.  RC, you may want to check it out too if you have any Asian markets near you.

I've eaten it lots of different ways.  Daikon could be grated like cauliflower, baked or fried.  It's water content is more like jicama than cauliflower.  It could definitely be cooked in a more Western style.

Heh! You need to visit here, LM.  Not a chance in hell of finding an asian market.  We don't even have a synagogue within 40 mile radius, to give you an idea. And asians are rarer than jewish around here.

Heh, its interesting how we live in the same country but are in such different places.  I've never been to the South, unless you count Florida, but I don't think that counts.

Nope, Florida definitely does not count. Florida is like the South tried to have a baby with California but after the fact realized they were siblings and ended up with a troglodyte child.
