The Big Box stores are going the same way the department stores went:

1. Big Box stores require high vehicle traffic arteries, but people are driving less and stopping less. 20 somethings don't like cars or driving.  Those same arterial roads are often filled with walls of trucks which further puts people off.

2. Shopping online, has become embedded in our society.  You can buy the same stuff, or better online with just a few taps on your phone and it arrives 2 days latter on your doorstep - and most people know it.

3. Stores like Aldi are eating away at the grocery end of the big box businesses like Walmart and Target.

4. The "outlot" fast food joints and canned decor sit down restaurant chains (Olive Garden, Applebee's, Friday's) don't attract like they used to and therefore make the area less of a "destination."

QuoteBrick-and-mortar retail is in trouble. You can tell that from reports on this very site of retail bankruptcies and store closings, and from the number of Amazon boxes piled in front of your and your neighbors' front doors. Today, Target executives shared discouraging news of falling sales and profits at its investors day event, and explained that the chain's way forward is to imitate Walmart.

This one died long ago, they just didn't know it at the time.

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. posted its fourth straight quarter of declining same-store sales, as the retailer's efforts to revamp its namesake brand showed little sign of drawing back shoppers.

They all have a ways to go, imo. Costco isn't as bad as crap like one price online vs another price in store nonsense I've run into with Target, but they have other issues.

I do think Costco is more insulated than the rest due to being the main bulk/discount buying shop and related shipping costs.
