Cashless society getting closer, survey finds

More than a third of Europeans and Americans would be happy to go without cash and rely on electronic forms of payment if they could, and at least 20 percent already pretty much do so, a study showed on Wednesday.

I could see going largely cashless, but would really bridle at losing the cash option.

Mike - your question about "how much cash do you have RIGHT NOW" keeps running through my mind. When the 1997 flood hit in Yosemite and a lot of people evactuated without getting back to their homes, many were caught with no cash and no accessible money for a while. It doesn't take the apocalypse. These systems are frighteninly fragile

It still find it odd that you lot (Americans) are happy to let your CC and debit card disappear across the restaurant in the hands of someone else.

But Apple pay for example needs my fingerprint plus quite a convoluted signup procedure, knowing lots of details.

Agreed. BTW, I've ordered the "ATM Only" card and will destroy the debit card. Those are dangerous on several counts.  But the average American ^{reference George Carlin here} doesn't have a clue.

Within the last year or two, I read somewhere that restaurants were still the biggest risk of cc theft.
