It's not clear today what Stack Overflow's main revenue generator is, but the company appears to be putting its forward bets on more into paid enterprise services.

They handle massive amounts of traffic and have killed most other coding forums in the world. Because it's spread out over so many domains, people don't see the scale. It's like Reddit for coders, but spread across multiple domains. In the Drupal world, SO has completely killed the Drupal forums. Nothing happens there anymore and they were super busy.

There pretty much is not a search you can do on Javascript, PHP, Python, Drupal and a host of other topics where SO doesn't dominate page 1.

That depends on the "exchange". Each one has its own culture. Some are trolled by people who make it their life's mission to mark questions as "off-topic" and close them. The SO Drupal community is great though and there's a reason it has destroyed the Drupal.org forums.

I guess there are worse reasons, but still, they must have burned through a lot money by now
