Baby boomers, ages 55-75, have long been migrating to Southern states as they enter retirement years. Now a new study shows wealthy Generation X, ages 40-54, are doing much of the same.

The problem is that, because of my hobbies and tastes, I'd rather be working where I am than retired in most of the states on that list. One unifying factor for the "best" states is that most of them are pancake flat. I just can't do it. I did five years in Wisconsin and it was really hard for me.

Missed this earlier. I almost wish our city would make some bad lists. It's constantly on top10 lists to move to and these mfs won't stop pouring in. I'm going to have to gtfo soon.

The same happened to Wilmington NC. It really went crazy when they finished I-40 to it, making it only 2 hours from Raleigh.  I still love it there, but now it's a big, sprawling mess traffic-wise.  ....And all the good bistros and restaurants get overwhelmed.  About a year ago, my daughter told me they've finally found a little mom & pop Italian place hidden in an old strip mall.  She said the locals were keeping it a secret.  Didn't work. Now it's slammed.  Going out to eat anywhere that's good is like that Biscuit place we ate in Asheville --crowds lined up out to the sidewalk.

I've been wondering what the fires and power outages are going to do to Calif migrations.  Even telecommuting goes to hell when you can't rely on power and access.

My brother keeps saying he's headed your way now that the kids are done with school.

Me, I subscribe to the Daniel Pinkwater philosophy of suffering. Explaining his choice of car, he said that everyone has a quota of suffering in life and you can fill your quota by owning a Peugot.  I'm planning to fulfill mine by living in California... I write this on short sleep after listening to my absentee neighbor's generator run for 60 hours straight. All night long.

The only positive I can see about the fires and the PG&E failings is that maybe it will stem the tide of people flooding into this state.  I am so sick of the crowds.

And Washington has no state income tax.

We are seeing a big flood of people moving to Spokane from California, Portland, and Seattle. Talking to my real estate agent friend many of them are selling their homes there and are able to make all cash offers on houses twice as big as they are coming from. $250K will get you a nice 4 bedroom, 2500 sq foot house in a good neighborhood. $400-500K gets you an excellent house in an excellent neighborhood or a good house with 10-20 acres of land.

No, no, no. Tell him to go to, ummm, ummm, Greenville SC. He'll like it there, I swear.

Yeah, while we have top-notch universities, our secondary school system is crap.

He already works for a company in NC. Part of the reason for the move is he's tired of being the only person in a satellite office. So he doesn't have "the world" on the table.
