Well geeze, Paul... Don't do it if it's going to make you cry! It's probably not worth it.  ;)

Paul,
Go for the HTC Desire.

Google Navigation is awesome. Cannot get it for Iphone.

(Don't ask NFFC how accurate it is though)

My iPhone 3GS has given up the ghost and I cannot upgrade until January.  To bridge the gap, I started using an unlocked Google Nexus One phone with my AT&T sim about a month ago.

After a week or so of fumbling around, I'm was completely weaned from the iPhone.  Clean and sober for over a month now.  No withdrawals.

I really like the Android OS now, especially when traveling.  Gmail integration is much better, maps and navigation are killer, and apps are coming along.  Angry Birds is available, what else would I need?

I don't love the N1 phone though and may switch back to Verizon and get the Samsung Fascinate or the Droid Incredible.  Better phones, better network.

is htc based on Android?

I was told it was like a child had tried to copy the iphone and given up part way though?

Android opinions?

Rupert

Naw, that was an Appleoid told you that  :)

A friend who is an Appleoid, turned green when he saw the nav on my HTC. It is remarkable. Like being in a helicopter over your route....

Otherwise Very similar in lots of ways.  All the Apps I have work great.  Some say it makes the iphone look a bit dated, but I am the wrong person to comment on it.

It is cheaper.

Fundamentally, they are the same.

Igoring the 'Is Jobs more evil than Google" question, the main difference that decided me is that when you buy an Android phone you can choose the feature set that matters to you.

For example, I wanted a bigger screen and an 8Meg camera - these mattered to me, but may not do to everyone.

Android is more about choice and customisation - iPhone about style/fashion - but far fewer differences than either set of fanbois would like to believe.

I guess the Windows Phone 7 will be fighting with RIM for the corporate and non-committed home user market - still think they may be too late to the show though.

Windows Phone 7 had a dismal launch on Monday according to the tech press. I wouldn't know; They don't sell the things in my market. I would be interested to get my hands on one to play around.

I'm going to come back and ask more Android questions when my iPhone contract ends in February or March next year. Japan is just getting going on the Android platform so we're limited to a few models. I liked the looks of the Desire HD though.

How's the music player on the Android? I hate iTunes, but the iPhone is a great media player.

Gurtie

I don't know how it performs but our designers are all drooling over the Windows phone interface, which means it must be good because they won't go near anything windows without being forced normally.

Colin, you kill joy. Anyway, Rich cannot get a reception on his iphone, he knows he style is shallow :)

I have a Sony X10, so it comes with Sony's own add-on player - works well enough for me. Sending it through my Bose Acoustimass 5 speakers it sounds as good as any other source I put though there.

There's a raft of media player apps - think most run using the same codecs that are already built in, but you are spoiled for choice with different interfaces and features.

I don't expect there is an noticeable difference between the iPhone and most decent Android phones, but I guess you may find some of the really cheap ones have poorer quality output - not really tried any but the one I have.
