FIFA Charges Show U.S. Justice Department's Long Reach

tl;dr  Don't use our banks for bribes unless you're the REAL NFL football

BoL

Good on them I say. Something definitely stinks in the higher ups of FIFA.

Gurtie

yeah, to be honest I'm not sure Europeans (or at least Brits, or at least ones I know) have felt FIFA is really good for 'our' football (football being a sport where you move the ball with your FOOT as opposed to one where you pick it up and run around with it) for some time now.

Brad

Watching DW last night they were not sure FIFA would survive these investigations if the national governing bodies got fed up.

Worth a read.

WTF
"FIFA is exempt from taxes at every level, and the profits from the World Cup finals all go to FIFA rather than the host country."

JasonD

I dealt a little with FIFA while at a former employer. Even with my extremely limited exposure to them, I can honestly say they are most corrupt organisation i have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.

Everything that is landing at the moment, I am sure is deserved and long term will do the world of football a LOT of good. However, it's useless unless Seb is also fingered.

Rumbas

There is no doubt these scumbags are some of the most corrupt people in the world.

Well, I think we're the guys to do it. We don't have the fanboi defend-at-all-costs mentality to deal with.  Maybe you guys can reign in the NFL for us?  (Also tax-exempt.)

That might happen since the NFL is reaching out more outside of the US. I'm completely against that though. It breaks with every hallowed American tradition to have a sport where you invite countries other than Canada to the World Championships.

JasonD

I have real issues with tax exempt organisations that are run in a for profit way.

> NFL
Churches

etc.

I'd much rather that they are liable and then avoid it like all the large multi nationals do.

They are getting rid of this: http://www.wsj.com/articles/nfl-to-end-tax-exempt-status-1430241845

The league office, which was the only tax exempt entity, will now not have to disclose the commissioner's salary which is the main reason they are doing this. The teams and owners still had to pay all their taxes all along so the overall financial impact of this is pretty minor overall.

Blatter resigns. Of course, reddit is on the case

Black smoke rises from the back of FIFA HQ indicating the ceremonial burning of the documents.

Getting popcorn.  This is going to be good over the coming months, especially if when they dig up dirt about how Russia and Bahrain got the World Cups.
