Froze ours (and my brother's) 15-20 years ago.  It used to require a PIN for each of the 3 credit bureaus if you needed to have a vendor open a charge account.  IIRC, a PIN isn't required anymore.  So it is less of a PITA ...but probably less secure.

PITA or otherwise, it the best way to try and prevent identity theft.
