Gen Z would rather cut Social Security benefits for current retirees than pay higher taxes to save the program

This quote almost makes me laugh.

QuoteMembers of Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, were eight times more likely than those 65 and older to say they support reducing benefits for current and future retirees to fix the program's finances — 47% versus 6%, the poll found.

More than half of respondents under age 30 said younger workers should be protected from higher taxes even if it means reducing benefits for current retirees, compared to 89% of adults age 65 and older who said current retirees' benefits should be protected even if it means increasing taxes for younger workers.

Who would have guessed?

Can't really blame them.  Most people believe social security will eventually be eliminated.  The young adults paying into it now are doubtful that they will ever get a return.

WTH did they find those respondents? Homeless shelters? The tunnel under Vegas?

Blame them? I'm cheering them on. So I guess I would in that 6% of respondents of SS age that think we need cuts (albeit with some protections for people who are utterly dependent on it)

I look at the largess that the government lavishes on people my age and older while huge numbers of people in their 20s and 30s with decent jobs can't afford to move out of their parents' houses (if they are lucky enough to have parents who can house them). I feel that we have broken the intergenerational social contract and horded so much of the benefits for ourselves, I would not expect Gen Z to want to honor that contract either.

I just hope they don't come for me with pitchforks and AR-15s.

But when the jenga tower collapses, I will not blame them at all for just yelling, "Everbody for themselves!!" (because they certainly will NOT yell "Every man for himself" like some old codgers).

Or, more likely, hearing me whine and gnash my teeth and rend my garments at the unfairness of the world and rolling their eyes, shaking their heads and quietly muttering, "Buck up Boomer."
