Web Development / Re: Would ugly sites still sell?
« on: December 16, 2019, 12:09:08 PM »
I think a site can be ugly and still sell as long as the more important factors are there (some of which have been touched on here already)

1. Speed and ease of customer journey
2. trust - if the site looks trustworthy, phone numbers, reviews, etc people will buy even if ugly.
3. Target market, product and competition
4. Quality of product images

However, I think a better looking site with more conversion points that specifically targets your market will sell better in most circumstances, therefore it is all relative to your customer and competition.

For UK guys...

The plan was like a bad movie script -- complete with an attacker in a puzzling outfit and a backup weapon.

The intruder entered a victim's home in Iowa carrying a cellphone, a stolen gun and a Taser. On his head was pantyhose and a hat, along with dark sunglasses to mask his eyes, court documents show.

But things did not go as planned.

Now, Rossi Lorathio Adams II could face two decades in prison. A jury found him guilty Thursday of hiring the intruder to break into the house in Cedar Rapids in 2017 to force the transfer of an internet domain at gunpoint, according to the US Attorney's Office in the Northern District of Iowa.

Threats and gun emojis
Adams, 26, founded a social media company called "State Snaps" four years ago. The company operates on various social media platforms, including Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter, court documents said.

"At one time, Adams had over a million followers on his social media sites, which mostly contained images and videos of young adults engaged in crude behavior, drunkenness and nudity," court documents said.

His followers often used the slogan "Do it for state" when posting videos and images. So, Adams tried to purchase the internet domain "doitforstate.com" from a Cedar Rapids resident who owned it, court records said. But the owner did not want to part with it.

"Between 2015 and 2017, Adams repeatedly tried to obtain 'doitforstate.com,' but the owner of the domain would not sell it. Adams also threatened one of the domain owner's friends with gun emojis after the friend used the domain to promote concerts," court records show.

Then he had an idea: Why not take it by force?

Cousin sentenced to 20 years
In June 2017, Adams enlisted his cousin to break into the domain owner's home and force him to transfer it. The cousin drove to the domain owner's house and provided a demand note, which contained instructions for transferring the domain to Adams, court records show.

After entering the home, the intruder grabbed the victim's arm and ordered him to connect his computer to the internet.

He put the firearm against the victim's head and ordered him to follow the instructions. "Fearing for his life, the victim quickly turned to move the gun away from his head. The victim then managed to gain control of the gun," court records show.

The victim shot the intruder multiple times and called the police.

The intruder, Adams' cousin Sherman Hopkins Jr., was sentenced to 20 years in prison last year.

Now it's Adams' turn. He will remain in custody pending sentencing. He faces a maximum 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.

Web Development / Re: Product catalog without e-commerce
« on: February 18, 2019, 12:43:37 PM »
I am surprised you are not a fan, woocommerce is here to stay so don't worry about that. I would imagine this would be the quickest way to build with a catalogue plugin as you can upload via csv and create the attributes for filtering products and product search. There is also a custom product page builder plugin if you wanted to change the way it looks and you also have the ability to add related products and even (with a plugin) an amazon type..people who saw this also looked at.. type of functionality.

Plus there are a crap load of templates to choose from that work with it out of the box.

If you are using table plugins, I am replying on the presumption that this is for on page content and not a woocommerce product compare solution. The only way I have got around this is;

a) as you say scrollable tables which are not the best (tablepress does have a plugin for this I can drag it out if you need) or
b) using wp bakery and table press and physically seperating the tables on mobile to have more than one. I hid the main table and show the multiple tables on mobile under column settings.

Here is an example (it will show the break if you resize the browser)

Yes in recent months I have been on a few shared servers to upgrade the php for performance reasons and they were all set to default at 5.6.

You wouldn't give anyone but staff a shop manager account anyway as the role does have a lot of power, too much for what is required, if using staff that arnt trusted then a custom role is needed.

I have just recently embedded a map a couple of days ago on a client site, I couldn't use any plugins because of the API block you mention but going old school and creating the map on my maps and then using googles iframe code still worked. Don't know if they will block this soon but it works currently.

Thanks Jetboy, so after a few hours looking into it, it looks like there is no way I can support these browsers on my platform and it is a choice of using AWS and cloudfront to speed up the website and losing what little there was left or the site running slower for the rest of them. This is a shame as I have had a few customers come to me with this issue. I hope it doesn't hurt the bottom line too much.

Okay so ended up doing a virtual windows 7 machine for peace of mind as the browser testing was throwing up weird structuring, and after further investigation on the clients that had issues, it looks like it is IE 7 is the culprit and I have larger problems than adding to cart right now, however, I think this new issue may have only been from last week. Ahhh the joys of web dev, down the rabbit hole I go. I will add my feedback on turbo.net (as this is free) once I have fixed some issues :o

Thanks ergophobe I will look into those.

Grindone -  some of my customers are not able to add to cart on IE, now I don't know what version they are using (it was hard enough to find out what browser). I can't replicate the issue so I need to find a way to do this to make sure it is fixed as I only find out when someone calls to tell me and pay over the phone. I need to be able to support older browsers as I am dealing with large corporations and government/healthcare bodies that, as we know, can be working off old systems.

Have an issue with an unknown version of IE that I can't replicate, all of the free online ones are not showing the fault on any of the IE versions. Do you guys recommend a program or site you would recommend before I build a virtual machine to test?
