I use Lens quite a bit as a phone app. I can't imagine it would be that helpful on desktop

I've been a mac/ubuntu user for a few years now, but I've been using a laptop with Win 11 on it and I have to say, it's great. Intensive use, no crashes. Smooth and fast.

This is really interesting. Good to see some action on a 120 year old idea! Lets hope they don't all meet with an accident the night before the test  ;)

I had my rigs running for only eight months before they couldn't turn a profit due to the power they were consuming. It was a fun project though.

the pizza & chinese food delivery drones will become warring factions fighting over the heliodroniopad landing area.

There has to be a massive opportunity area here.

Long live SnapChat!

This seems to be where it's at with my lot.

I have been using Livestream for a while - http://new.livestream.com/live-video-tools

Good service and good software.  Free version plays an ad when you connect, but other than that it's great.

Hardware & Technology / Re: TV / cable users: trending steeply down

I'm not sure how the UK stacks up against the US, but in my household we cut all cable/sat subs and made the most of the free/(licence fee) services.  a good 50% of the viewing comes via the web now.  40% more is recorded and watched later.

Monetization / Do you buy content?
« on: November 17, 2013, 05:46:37 PM »
I have had the idea for a little content (initially written content) business floating around for a while.  I think I have spent more money on content than anything else over the years and I really want to offer something 'better'.

I'm going to try and take this from idea to first customer in a month.  I am not sure if I am going to take the route of matching writers with customers and taking a percentage, or manage everything myself, but the ultimate aim is to build something which runs without me, but is so firmly structured and procedural that the quality to the customer remains the highest I can possibly get it, and is the number one priority.

So if you buy, or have bought in the past, I have a few questions -

1. What do you hate most about buying content?

2. Have you found a supplier you are happy with?

3. Have you found one supplier who can deliver everything you need?

4. How much of a factor is price?

5. Do you usually look for quality or quantity?

6. Where do you look when you need to buy content?

Bonus question - Do you want to buy any content?  ;)

Thanks for your help on this.  I'd love to hear any feedback, positive or negative.

Thank you all for the kind and encouraging words.

What kinds of things would you LIKE to be doing in addition to writing a novel?

Well, I have been soul searching and decided that I don't want to develop any more.  I have been studying for the SQL 2012 exams and realised I just don't love it anymore.  Not like some of the other people in the space do anyway.  It has just become something I 'do'.

I have a number of things I am going to try, but I am going to start by setting myself the challenge of starting a little business in a month using only the time that the rest of my family are watching 'I'm a Celebrity', I'm going to start a new thread for that because I'd love the thoughts of everyone on here.

Oh... and I'm 15,000 words into the novel.  I aim to finish and publish it by Christmas.  I have outlines for three more to make a series.  I also have a very rough outline for 8 shorter stories, also in a series.

Thank you all so much for the replies on the thread and those via PM and email.

Well, I had a meeting with the client today to clarify the future vision of their business.  I went in (after talking it over with my family) with my contract termination letter in my pocket.  I honestly believed I would come away full of determination to carry on.  However, It didn't work out that way. I just can't get my morals and professional values to fit with what they are doing.

I hope I did the right thing by offering to help them find suitable replacements, but even that is playing on my mind now.

Anyway, I'm ready to work hard at anything I can turn my hand to.  Please.....Please! (I am sounding desperate?) PM me, email me, look me up on linkedin etc (PM for address as this is outer core).  I'm not after money at this point, I just want to try things out.

So, just like Jack Sparrow in the vision put forward by DB (though perhaps not as good looking), I am stepping onto the dock ready for new adventures!

I think you are right Rooftop.  There must be a lot of money to be made for the people who can start to solve that problem though  ;)

What Graphics cards do you have and if you're no longer using them would you be willing to sell them?

(Yes, I am playing with non Bitcoin, GPGPU based parrallel processing)

I only use GPU's for scrypt based coins (Litecoin etc).  I use radeon 7950's.  If you are buying then I'd advise you buy new and not second hand from another miner, oh and get the Saphire Vapour X ones.  The reason is that they are running flat out 24/7 and the fans are not built for it.  I keep a stock of replacement fans now and expect them to last 4-5 months in the spahires, and maybe 3 months from the other cards.

For bitcoin I use USB ASIC's now.  Cheaper to run, more powerful AND have pretty blinking lights!  I use headless raspberrypi's to control them.

It is an arms race though, hardware ages quickly in this game.

thesaintv12 - are you able to make any coins / money with your equipment anymore? or is the new difficulty too much?

Yes, if I sold now I would be in up.  It would only be pocket money though.  My plan is to hold long term. I also use 10% of my bank to trade with.

If I was getting in now I think I'd look at just buying the coins rather than mining them.

I'm not under the impression that it will make me rich, I tend to approach projects like this with a view that they might each pay off a bit of the mortgage.
