Monetization / Re: Adsense coverage ratios
« on: October 05, 2012, 10:49:41 AM »
If the Adsense coverage ratios for a site are pretty poor have any folks found a good alternative to use in place of showing those pesky public service ads/blank space. Obviously, things will be niche dependent to an extent but generally speaking do you use CPM deals to fill in or specific affiliate image links for instance? Any insight would be great.

You should be able to opt-out of the public service ads.

Also, these days Adsense seems more focused on personal targeting that niche targeting - it's long been a sore point of mine that my finance sites are as likely to show dating or slimming ads rather than finance links, though you can block certain categories of ads.

If you're seeing blank spaces, though, I would presume either you've only just put up the ads, or else you may be blocking them somehow?

Web Development / Google Plus profile to show in SERPs?

I'm curious - how do you associate content you produce so that your profile pic for your Google Plus account shows up in the SERPs?

Quite interesting:

Now just got to figure how to implement this in Wordpress - just been trying a few attempts to populate this automatically with tags and categories outside the loop, but not succeeded so far.

Economists and even Fed officials disagree on whether further asset purchases will have any lasting effect on the economy.

Pop quiz - any evidence of QE by any country, over the past few years, having any significant positive effect?

Hardware & Technology / Re: Firefox OS preview

FireFox the browser is getting so bad that I'm on the verge of switching to something else. It hawks so much memory and just eats up the computer. Slow pos.

Agreed - and that Mozilla feel like they are constantly crapping on the same webmasters who evangelised it.

Opera is the browser I keep coming back to and using long term, specially on Linux where there are not too many full featured browsers, but also on OS X and Win 7 too.

Firefox looks like an Opera clone now.

Hardware & Technology / Re: Ditching iPhone switching to Samsung Galaxy S3
« on: September 05, 2012, 12:37:18 AM »
Personally I'm surprised - I've found the Apple walled garden very accomodating - pretty much what you need is already there for you - while Google's Android as very fragmented and disorganised, so you need to put most everything together to get it working anywhere near like an iPhone.

Or have Samsung addressed issues such as iCloud and similar?

Hardware & Technology / Encryption programs?
« on: August 09, 2012, 02:27:03 PM »
Am looking to start using a Lacie Cloudbox to save to the Cloud, but figured it would be a wise precaution to ensure everything uploaded there is encrypted first.

Anyone have any recommendations on encryption programs? Am currently using Windows 7.

Web Development / 123-reg login issues
« on: August 09, 2012, 02:24:47 PM »
Anyone else able to login with 123-reg at the moment?

Currently unable to login to my main account with my username/password combo.

Clicked on "forgot password" but nothing come through via email, but might have changed, causing additional problems.

Noticed they have a new login URL - used to be /secure/ but now it's /public/login/

Monetization / Re: Facebook grabs bigger slice of display ad pie

Is there any statistical evidence that FB ads have decent actioned stats?

Simply that so far people are talking about eyeballs, not conversions, I thought the latter was entirely what online marketing was all about.

I've got some strong established sites, specifically in general finance, property, insurance, and banking, and know I'm under monetising them.

I feel very bogged down with work at present though, not least because I'm pushing on expanding into a retail niche.

Therefore is there anyone in finance lead generation (mortgages, insurance, property sales, etc etc) who would be interested in talking about a possible team up on a revenue share basis, where I provide the assets and they provide the means of monetisation?

Am not looking for basic affiliate agreements or for SEO purposes - am thinking specifically about lead generation, and how to use for best effect.

Anyone wants to PM for further details of the sites, you're welcome to.

Traffic / Re: Google results going silly again
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:22:12 PM »
Only 4 organic listings for the BBC now - but funny that the 2 Google News snippets for the BBC, one is about the Greenland icesheet and has nothing to do with satellite TV, though probably mentions the word "satellite" somewhere on the piece.

Funny that, because when I first saw the bodged result, I figured it was a semantic processing value being tweaked. The inclusion of that news piece still suggests that, ie, Google trying to figure out relationships to "satellite news" rather than looking directly at keyword associations as much where possible.
